FAQs
Do all Listerine products have Child-Safe Caps now?
We are in the process of transitioning to Child-Safe Caps for all Listerine mouthwash products, except Listerine Smart Rinses. We plan to complete these changes in phases to maintain a consistent supply.
At what age should children start rinsing with Listerine?
- Alcohol-containing variants: 12+
- Non-alcohol variants: 6+
Is alcohol the only reason why kids should not use Listerine at a younger age?
Listerine mouthwash is indicated for use according to usage instructions. An ability to follow instructions is essential in order to avoid swallowing and adverse effects.
Why are you switching to Child-Safe Caps when it is not required by the FDA or any law?
- At Kenvue, we always put the consumer at the center of everything we do. Throughout our 140-year history, we have continuously invested in innovation through rigorous science and consumer insights research. We believe that adding the Child-Safe Cap serves the best interests of Listerine users, even though this is not a mandatory regulatory requirement.
- In 1984, we were the first company to introduce Child-Safe Caps in over-the-counter drugs to keep the contents safe from children, giving you one less thing to worry about at home.
Why does Listerine have ingredients that are potentially dangerous to children in the first place?
Listerine is formulated with a unique combination of ingredients that are proven to deliver the product’s efficacy when used as directed. Scientifically speaking, all ingredients can be good or bad, depending on the dose exposure. Each Kenvue product formulation must pass our rigorous safety assurance process to ensure its safe use by consumers. We continually re-evaluate ingredients to reflect new scientific developments and consumers’ points of view. We are committed to offering the best products that consumers can trust.
Aren’t there other ways to keep mouthwash safe, such as changing ingredients?
While we are committed to continuously improving our product formulation, our current formulation is what we have found to best deliver a whole mouth clean, leading to a healthier mouth.
